What We Do
MMC Contrarian’s (MMA) business is centred on starting or acquiring best of breed funds management businesses in attractive asset classes. For start up’s, MMA provides seed funding for those managers to firstly, create a track record that will attract further funds and secondly, to provide MMA shareholders a return on that capital. In addition to seed funding, MMA will provide the license, working capital, funding for salaries, legal and compliance support, product development, brand management and distribution to ensure that the managers succeed.
As a partner MMA ensures that:
- there is a strong alignment of interests between each manager and MMA;
- there are few bureaucratic distractions;
- any scale benefits achieved by MMA are passed through to each manager;
- there is enough capital in the business to provide for salaries and to build a meaningful track record; and
- each manager has a succession plan to move beyond the original founders of the firm.
Why MMC Contrarian?
Good fund managers are exceptional at managing investors assets but sometimes find it hard to juggle the competing demands of managing funds in addition to running a business. Having an active partner like MMA can help over come the following problems encountered by new managers such as:
- Not having a coherent strategy and business plan;
- Not having the necessary capital to see out the tough times;
- Lack of differentiation in the product offering;
- Poor distribution arrangements;
- Poor risk management and governance;
- Lack of experience at the board level;
- Trying to run a business in addition to managing a portfolio; and
- Not enough assets on which to create a track record.
MMC’s five stage proprietary process helps overcome these issues with the goal of moving a business to a steady state of performance within 12 to 16 weeks of establishment or for acquired firms, ensuring the business moves beyond its original platform to reach its full potential.
MMA’ advantages include:
- A strong balance sheet
- An experienced board
- An understanding of the challenges boutique managers face
- A strong governance and risk management mindset
